Learning opportunities for small business operators of Northern Michigan, and those who would like to be, are held free of charge on the following dates. Unless otherwise indicated, all events are held from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in the McGuire Community Room at the Traverse Area District Library, 610 Woodmere Avenue in Traverse City.

Each of these valuable workshops is brought to you at no cost due to the support of The Bank of Northern Michigan, Chase Bank, First Community Bank, Fifth Third Bank, Honor Bank, Huntington Bank, mBank, Traverse City State Bank and the Traverse Area District Library.

May 13 Understanding Financial Statements, Taxes & Insurance
Though the thicket of legal and financial requirements of starting and operating a small business may look daunting at first glance, SCORE can help.  Join us for an in-depth discussion of the tax, legal and financial implications of small business operation.
June 10 Becoming a Franchisee
Franchising, the practice of using another firm's successful business model, can provide the emerging entrepreneur with a clear path to business success, but like any business opportunity, there are risks and rewards to consider. An experienced SCORE moderator will lead a detailed discussion of this popular though often complex concept to help you determine if a franchise is right for you.
July 8 Are You Ready to Start Your Own Business?
Are you an aspiring entrepreneur looking for the real story about starting and operating a business? Then this workshop is for you. We’ll discuss just what’s involved in establishing a new business or buying an existing business, with a sharp focus on understanding what it takes and the advantages and disadvantages of owning your own business. A precursor to future SCORE workshops and one-on-one counseling, we’ll discuss business plans, licensing and regulatory issues, finance and marketing, and much more. After the session, attendees have the opportunity to schedule follow-up counseling or sign up for future workshops.
August 12 Preparing Your Business Plan
Preparation of a comprehensive plan for the growth of your business is the first and most important step toward reaching your entrepreneurial goals.  Join us for this discussion of the business planning process, what it takes, what it includes, and the value that it returns, then take advantage of the opportunity to schedule free follow-up counseling with a SCORE Mentor.

SCORE Workshops & Events are held at the following locations:

  • The offices of the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce, 202 E. Grandview Parkway in Traverse City;
  • The Traverse Area District Library, 610 Woodmere Avenue in Traverse City;
  • The Northwest Michigan College AeroPark Campus, 2600 Aero Park Drive in Traverse City;
  • and at other venues in Northwest Michigan as appropriate.
